The Position: Senior Population Specialist (Demographer), Nairobi Kenya

 

An outstanding opportunity for a qualified individual with a background in Population Studies, Demography, Statistics, Mathematics, and Econometrics or the equivalent to make a real difference in the support to capacity development of population statistics in Somalia, ensure that UNFPA’s programs on population and development are implemented in the context of the ICPD Programme of Action and UNFPA Strategic Plan.

You will be part of a dynamic and passionate team in Somalia and Nairobi that works together to ensure that Population and Development issues are firmly placed within national development processes and national strategic frameworks; Supports the advocacy and resource mobilization strategy of the Country Office by compiling and synthesizing relevant background as well as drafting program/project proposals and networking with donors for project funding.

The Population Specialist/Demographer post, will be located in the Population and Development Unit, reporting to the Head of Unit and collaborating closely with the statistics and GIS team within the Unit as well as staff at the national and states statistical offices. His/Her primary responsibilities within the Population and Development Unit will be to provide technical support and capacity building to all aspects of the precensus, CRVS, surveys and policy development, including supporting the implementation of the pre-census assessment and the integration of geospatial dimensions in pre-census assessment. S/he will support the key areas of UNFPA’s mandate by providing technical input and capacity building in areas such as geospatial mapping, population modelling and analysis, CRVS data assessment and analysis and the use of population data for policies and programmes that address inequalities and serve those furthest behind. The Senior Population Specialist/Demographer will work in an integrated, coordinated, and systems strengthening fashion, which is fundamental for the overall strategy and working ethos of UNFPA.
